SC #10: Resolutions for the tanks in 2006

Well, I learned a lot in the last year and enjoyed every minute.. well, except for when I obsessed over a sick fish or lost one. I found a slew of great web sites, acquired a couple more tanks, several more fish (lost a very few to illness or age), successfully grew a variety of plants, had my live bearers and egg layers both spawn, tried out various ferts, substrates, setups, fish, shrimp, snails and an ADF, lighting, other equipment and products such as DIY CO2, powerheads, heaters, and other gadgets, expanded my library, and even attempted to go filterless (worked only on planted tanks with light loads), switched to glass tops, tried out different woods, slate and foods, including frozen (never live food). I even won a 3 gallon nano in a contest. So I plan to sit back, reap the bennies and let the fishies and plants do their thing whilst I relax and enjoy them (famous last words).

...now where can I put another tank? ;)

Permits? Please educate me...why do you need a permit from the government to set up a tank?! Are you keeping protected species?

I am not sure what the laws elsewhere are, but here in Canada it is illegal to collect any wildlife without a permit.

If you are fishing for sport you need a license, and the same basic principles (with more complicated license processes) apply for collecting live fish & critters for a fish tank.

Edit: this link outlines the laws regarding collecting BC wildlife, including sea life

Bingo! Most states have restrictions on collecting live organisms, and many also restrict keeping native species without the proper permits. I haven't really dug into CA laws yet, but I'm pretty sure there are some restrictions on collecting and transporting. Also, since we'll be on base, there are base regulations to review and comply with as well.

With my tank it will be the same every year. Watching the tank to make sure everything is growing. I may get a Ca reactor on top of watching. I will get rid of more coral cuttings to help with the upgrade, then watch some more. I know what I will do next year.
