Scary

Your state should have it's own sex offender list. I check mine on a regular basis because we had one living down the road from us. I know the story to his situation, and was glad to see his name removed. But I also found out there was a offender of children living on the same street as my daughter's former school building. I was glad when the school moved. Personally, I feel that if they are known for offending children, they should not be allowed to live anywhere near a school.

This website (GEL's) does give exact addresses.

hmmmm..... I do know there's a department of Corrections site for Jersey.... it's very informative, I wonder if it's in there some where....

I see your points and I totally agree, if they can call it a "drug-free school zone" making penalties stiffer for dealers and such, why wouldn't they do that for offenders of children....

I think the registrations are a good idea--I'm a little surprised that the address is listed, although I recall a news story saying that many didn't have accurate addresses--meaning, that address may be 2-3 years old. However, there other part of the story related to a man who moved from Florida to Colorado--registered, etc, all in accordance with the law. The neighbors found out and raised a ruckus, flat out saying the offender (attempted molestation on a child) shouldn't have moved into a 'family' neighborhood. Well, much as you don't like it--where on earth isn't a 'family' neighborhood? Outside of retirement communities, I've never seen any place that didn't have some kids. So where are these people supposed to go? They made a mistake--in many cases, they regret the mistake, went through counseling and treatment programs and have been deemed safe. Would it be fair to leave them in jail, or some sort of protective custody?

pretty creepy, I put in by zip code (mine isn't very big, smaller city) and there were alot! Only one on my street, convicted of rape :mad2: ! Going to have to see which end of the street and go the other way when I walk my dog late at night :dog: ...
I also put in the last name of some people I know, and found my best friends uncle listed, You would never know it, he was the nicest guy, guess you really can't tell that way though anyhow. He passed away a few years ago.

Another thing though, which I don't agree with about the lists. A person could be listed for having sex with a consenting person, lets say a 17 year old and a 19 year old. Not very likely, but it does happen, and that person should not be feared by his/her neighbors, or be listed as a sex offender!!

Thanks for posting the website. FL also has the fdle.com website.

I know that some, when they move, don't report their new address. An old friend of mine had that problem when he moved into a house. The previous owner didn't notify that they moved.

As I said, my neighbor's situation was a BS one. He was accused for doing something he didn't. Got convicted. Then the girl admitted it was a lie. She was getting even. He had to raise money to pay for a lawyer, then pay the court to get his name removed. It took quite some time for him to do that.

I understand your point, OG, about where they can live. I just feel that a school is a jackpot target for a predator.

I didn't check to see if the site by GEL posts the severity of the offense, but the one that lived on the school street was for 'children'. Maybe I should say that I don't think they should live near an elementary school where children are known to walk.

The main thing is, as a parent, since my kids started talking and asking about their bodies, my husband and I have always talked to them about being touched. We use the nicknames of those body parts, and the appropriate names. Never be afraid of using the appropriate names of the children's body parts, some predators use that as an advantage if you don't.

The real stickey situation develops when the sex offender has children, and they do. I forget exactly what the rules are, but they can go to the school for conferences, programs etc, but they have to notify the school they will be there. SO now you have educators placed in the role of police...when they show up unannounced they are supposed to call the police. THe schools get lists of sex offenders in the area, at least they used to before the websites, maybe they just look them up now.

I have a friend at work whose son managed to get himself listed. IT was a prom date gone bad: let this be a lesson to you guys out there. They went to prom..had sex. He broke it off after prom, she got mad. Complained to daddy, who thought his little darling was pure as the driven snow. THey even had witnesses at the trial that told about her laughing about it with her friends. The bottom line was she was a minor and he was not so they got him for statutory rape.
The plot further thickens when his older sister brings her baby over for grandma to babysit. He's technically not supposed to be around her because shes a female under 18, yet it's his own home.

Thanks for that information.

That's kinda the situation my neighbor's son was in. He did finally raise the money to have his name removed.

It is a sticky situation.
