I will skip out on the external filter and use the money buy a powerhead. Are their specific brands people prefer and why?

I would love to get sump/refugium, but I don’t think we can pull it off this year. I do agree the potential for biological concepts are endless. Like I said earlier, this will be constantly evolving tank as new classes come in to take over. I would not be surprised if this will be an early addition.

E-mail or call richard at TBS and discuss your plans with him...
Im not going to brag about his rock, because i've never ordered any from him, nor have i ever spent single dime on anything from him...What i am going to brag on, is the person behind TBS...
I merely asked a question on this forum, about a bacteria he supplies with his rock, and today i get a package in the mail from him!
I will venture to say, you cannot recieve a better personal experience from any retailer on the planet. If he knows this is for educational purposes, I have no doubt that whatever you order will far exceed any expectations you might have...
For someone to sell an AC member some live rock, then follow up on that persons progress to the point of checking in on their web postings, and actually answering someone elses questions on those posts,(not to mention shipping them a package at his own expense) is well above and beyond the duties of a retailer....This is a true reefer, and someone who cares about his customers and fellow hobbyists, as well as the preservation of the hobby itself...
For me, this act of kindness has really shown me that not all retailers are about selling you that expensive piece of equipment, whether you need it or not... i think with him, its much more than the money!
Drop him a line, and see for yourself!
Personally, I will be re-evaluation my own budget and plans to try to place an order with them...

Nope no better... Well better actually.. Much better! As it helps with the dissolved gas balances. However air stones are a royal pain, and with saltwater, causes even bigger bubble sprits issues, to the point that a pump is much more convenient.

Update:

Got in touch with Richard from TBS. Talk about customer service! He, along with the help on these forums, are making us very excited to get going. We have place an order at MarineDepot. When those supplies come we will begin mixing our water.

One question that I hope you can help us on. Richard sent us this link with some of the organisms we can expect to find on our live rock: http://www.tampabaysaltwater.com/thepackage/organisms.html

We are now thinking about upgrading our lights so we can keep as many of these species happy as possible (We were planning on simple fluorescence initially). Our constraint is the budget. What do you suggest for lighting a 29 gallon tank (30" long) that is affordable.

Hmmm, so the question is, what type of corals are you planning on? Since it is a school, I am thinking you will be going with mostly softies, ie. mushrooms, zoas, leathers, etc, because they are the cheapest, and most hardy of corals.

For a good budget light that will support some corals in that tank, I would go with this one.

My opinion is that you wont need one at all...whether live sand or normal sand. Detrius and waste will not collect / settle on a sandbed if adequate flow is there..never needed one in any of my tanks...
