i want some fish that will school in a 20gal. I have some guppies in the tank that i would like two keep there. i was wondering if tetras would school with gupies? i only want to get 3-5 tetras. since they are $6 a piece

I'm a fan of whitecloud minnows that school tightly as a rule.
Some of the tetras don't school unless they feel threatened. They do they're own thing otherwise. IMO, the smaller the fish, the tighter the group will be.

Tetra's and hatchet fish are good choices for a 20-gallon. I really don’t think fish will school with another fish. However with that said I did have 2 glass tetra that did like to hang out with the hatchet fish. Go figure.

Marbled hatchet fish will stay smaller than other types of Hatchet fish and hatchet fish school at the top, so they are always there to see.
My serpae tetra really don’t school much usually it more like one or two hanging out together, unless I am changing the water, then they huddle up :-). If you are going to keep any school fish keep at least five. Otherwise they will hide all the time, well at least my tetra’s did when I only had three. Also tetra’s like very subdued lighting.

Six dollars a piece for Tetra's, what kind of Tetra's?
 
well i dont think are lps has whitecloud minnows. but the bext time i go there ill look, thanks. i was just going to get get some neons?
 
Harlequin rasboras are a mid to top dweller, hardy, pretty and school nicely. Remember that fish only school when they feel threatened, if they are happy in the tank they may not school all the time.
 
I also suggest rasboras.
