Hi all,

Tank is three years old, water conditions good. water & filter changes are 20% every 1-2 weeks.
i've a cory about two years old, good appetite, active, etc. However, fins around mouth are gone. substrate is good though. his other fins look good. however a black, spherical mass has shown up on his dorsal in the last week.
anyone seen this type of shape before?
thanx,
steve.

Usually damaged barbells are a sign of poor water quality. What are your water parameters (Ammonia, Nitrite, Nitrate)?

Hi,

Like Bitsy said, water quality is usually the cause of barbell loss.

Is your gravel smooth?

Could any fish be nipping off the barbells? I once had a Cory that had its barbells nipped off.

They usually regrow their barbells.

Hope your little guy gets his whiskers back!!!

72 g bowfront
2 emperor 400s
5 angels, 7 clown loaches, 7 corys, 1 whip tailed cat

You really have those fish in a 72g? I am very interested to see what your water params are........

7 clown loaches in a tank that size isn't going to work out long term, just to warn you....they will need a much much larger tank.

hey elizabeth,

i just finished testing:
83 degrees
Ammonia: 0
Nitrite: 0
Nitrate: 30
ph: 7.8
also noticed one of my angels is showing some bumps & discoloration on his pectorals...i'm thinking maybe bacterial? the loach's whiskers are all fine btw.

Hmmm, if I were you I would start by doing at least 50% water change, see if you can get that nitrate below 20. Is there any possible way that you can get us a pic? It could be bacterial in origin, but without a pic no one can say for sure. But I would definatly start with a large w/c and maybe try adding some melafix? Good luck!
