I think people have taken rock/metal/punk into to many different categories, personally. These kids today got all kinds of crazy names for music. All these types of music for a group of guys normally consisting of two guitarists, a drummer, bass player and singer... To me if it sounds heavy, its Metal (which I call good or bad metal), if it sounds slightly softer, I call it rock. If the singer doesn't have any real musical talent, but gives it hell and the band all sounds like their doing their own thing, not really playing in harmony, I call it punk.
I'm a huge Pantera fan, the way those guys play together is magical, just blend so well together, achieving such a heavy sound with a single guitarist. I really only enjoy metal that sounds similar to Pantera, like old school Metallica and a few of Phil Anselmo's side projects. There are even a few modern bands I feel do so quite well. Five Finger Death Punch and Throwdown, have a very similar, raw metal feel to their music, absolutely love it.
While my taste in music is pretty much limited to a certain style, I appreciate any type of music where I feel the artists put their soul on display through their music. I find this achieved most in the Metal genre.
For example, You get to know dimebag in a 5 min video, without him saying anything.
