Scrubbie pads for filter?

I always wonder how well they the plastic they are made of hold up to constant exposure to water. I use the Eheim efimech and have never had to change it in 15 years.

If you're looking for fine particle filtration, use pre-filters.
Filter floss/polyester batting is excellent ( as well as very inexpensive) for fine filtration/water clarification - if yours is clogging up & not doing the job, it's likely because you're not tossing/replacing them often enough. Filter floss needs to be used ( along with good bio-filtration media), layered up & weighted down, and replaced often. I use it in 2 filters on my 75 gal and rotate it's replacement in the filters. I'm placing new floss in one filter or another on a weekly basis. Pre-filtering will give it longer life without clogging.
I've also had effective filtration from dollar store muti-purpose scrubbers - 10 in a pack for a buck - double or triple layer them up. They're about 6" X 4" X 1/4", dark green fiber mesh pads, just like the top portion of some kitchen sponges - know what I mean ? I don't have a pic.

Scotch Brite is a good coarse filter material. Be sure and get the "sanding" type and not the type with soap. It typically comes in three types. Coarse, Medium, and Fine.
Dollar store scrubby pads are widely used in sump systems and canister filters.

If you are using a lot of filter floss, and the polyester quilt batting isn't cheap enough, find the nearest commercial or wholesale air filter supplier. They will have, or can order a couple of different weights of filter with no additives. The manager of my local supplier gave me a piece about 12" x 36" to try. This one is stiffer than the blue and white filter sheets and stiffer than quilt batting, but it is very good at trapping particulates.

And, by the way, they will also have furnace panels available that are incredibly efficient and quite reasonably priced. I buy a three layer panel what has a latex additive to one layer. A 20" x 25" panel costs just over $6.00 US. You change them two to three times a year. Far, far more efficient than the best 3M allergy filter panel.

the brillo pad like ones?
I was looking at walmart for these the other day, all of them say 'not for aquarium use,' but one said 'not for use on aquariums,' saying it might scratch the glass.

How can I be certain I've got the right ones if they all say 'not for aquariums'?

Last time I used a sponge in a filter - I killed my fish. :(
So I'm very suspicious of these things.
