I have a 29 somewhat recently cycled with 35lbs of LR, misc snails, cleaner shrimp, a firefish and 6 line rescued from the hawk in my 55FO, and a new set of flourescent green shrooms

My Remora hang on skimmer works great-as everyone says, once you see what a skimmer pulls out, you will be sold. I am saving bucks for one for my FO

Question is about the film on the surface-I didnt have this in the FO with a plain ole filter

Bought a 600 PH and aimed it up-it definitely clears a good size area(not all) but now I Have brown bubbly gunk floating on top-I took a paper towel and kinda cleaned it up

I am definitely having the diatom bloom-I use tap water. Considering water changes with RO down the road

Is it just diatoms, ya think??

I have heard there is a skimmer box for the remora-anyone have one? IS it designed to get this stuff? HOw big is it? I feel like I am cramming equipment into this thing

My guess is that the stuff on the surface is just proteinaceous glop that's attracted to the surface, just like to the bubbles of a skimmer. Unless you have an overflow or surface skimmer or a lot of current at the surface, it tends to build up.

Do you have some sort of HOB filter that breaks the surface on your FO? That may be one of the differences.

I used the surface skimmer on a bakpak, and it cleared the scum in less than 15 minutes. I expect that the one for the remora would do the same.
