Sea shells okay for freshwater tank??

I have what has to be the softest well water in recorded history-- GH around 50 (color is between the 40 and 80 readings so I'm guessing); KH less than 80--as well as ridiculously low pH at 6.2 or thereabouts. Apparently when they said RCS liked "soft and slightly acidic" water they did not mean THIS soft or THIS acidic.

That's moderately soft and only somewhat acid; some of the natural environments of our fish are in the low 5s and only trace GH and KH. I wish I had water like that; ideal for most of our fish.

What are "RCS"? I can't keep track of all these abbreviations people use.

PS---One or two would not be an issue. Your PH is already high, so it may not make a difference. Where is NorCal are you??

KarlTH: RCS=Red Cherry Shrimp. Sorry about that; I stumble over acronyms here on a daily basis too. Like all jargon it both saves time and valuable electrons, and identifies users as being among the Kewl Kids. :)

And my fish indeed don't have any problem with it! Everything I've had so far is South American, mollies and tetras and such, whose water preferences are the same way, soft and acidic. That's why I was/am so horrified at the massive shrimp death problem. I don't see such reports from anybody else so have been assuming it must be something with the local water characteristics.

The 4 remaining tigers are still hanging in as of early afternoon, and I just found another molt shell but no accompanying corpse. Maybe it was transport shock? We shall see...

Ok then I'll try my hand at throwing a few in and if I see any drastic changes I'll just toss them. I live in the valley so the most well known city out this way would probably be modesto

The impact on water chemistry should be minimal at best. Certainly not enough to cause any problems.

Kewl Kid?? Never been referred to as that before. Guess it's never too late (unless your name is RBishop or Mgamer).
