sealing top and back

I have a cover for the top of my aquarium, but water always climbs up and goes down the back of the aquarium, getting it all wet and then drying and forming this white crust stuff that does not come off with ANYTHING.

1. Is there any way I can keep the water from doing this?

2. What is the white crusty stuff and how do I get rid of it? I have tried Windex, water, and CLR helped a little bit, the rest did nothing.

You have a mineral build up from your tap water. Use a razor blade and vinegar. Just watch the corners and trim with the razor blade - only use it on the glass.

It sounds like your tank might not be level. You can check it with a level or see if the water seems to be at the same height all the way around it. You should adjust it if there is a large different in the height of the water in relation to the trim of the top of your tank. A little is ok, but too much of an angle can put extra pressure on your tank.

How high do you fill your tank up? Sometimes mine overflows slightly when I fill it up high and put my arm in to get something. Maybe you should keep a little less water in it.

Its hard to say exactly why the water goes out the back of your tank without looking at it. The only things I can think of are

1) The back is lower than the front
2) There is a splash made by your fish to make a small wave that goes over the back
3) You put your arm in or something else to overflow it

When does the water fall out the back? Take a close look and see if any of these are the cause. Maybe dry everything down and put some newspaper in the area and check when it gets wet.

I ususally leave a good 1/2 inch of space between the top of the tank and the water line. The tank is a little uneven I think, but not enough to make it spill.
