Since my ph is usually in the low 6's and i have RCS is adding seashells to the tank ok to keep the ph up a little more or do i have get crushed coral? I have a ton of moon snail shells from beach combing that i think would look nice if it's safe to use.

From what I've read (like here and here)(and oh yeah, here ) neither shells nor coral is likely to have much of an effect. What you want is peat. Not "peat moss" such as is sold at garden stores; that is easily found and cheap so we know it will not be the Right Stuff for use in a fishtank.

This is the Right Stuff, they say. Of course, the ubiquitous They also say that it is very very hard to change water qualities like pH by a very large range and keep it consistent, which is the most important thing. Better to find out what your water's qualities are, and select stock which is suited to it. Otherwise you get into an unending cycle of high-maintenance effort and constant testing, which is known to take a certain amount of enjoyment out of the hobby.

good luck.. :)

Unless your Ph is less than 6, or more than 9, I wouldnt worry about it for RCS.

other species are moes sensitive, but for RCS I wouldnt worry about it.

And Peat LOWERS your PH.

Peat will have the opposite affect on Ph.

How big is the tank? Seashells or crushed coral should work well to help raise the Ph. I use to have a layer of crushed sea shells under my substrate in my shrimp tank and it did well to buffer the Ph.

Did I read the OP's post completely backwards?

(scrolls up and peers at screen)

It appears that I did.

Never mind.

/goes off to study whole confounded subject of pH and shrimp again, blushing wildly.

the tank is a 20 long.

the last reading i had on my ph was 6 i do have 2 large pieces of wood in there.

so the shells would be ok though ? The more i think about it the more i think they would look nice in there.

no need to blush :)

sure go ahead and put some in there.. btw.. throw a calcium carbonate pill in there every once in a while for your shrimp to munch on..

Unless you plan on very closely monitoring, and adjusting your Ph on a daily basis, I wouldnt worry about it.

Many fish & Shrimp will adapt to a high or low Ph in time, but they will never adapt to a fluctuating Ph. The best Ph is a stable Ph.

yeah i normally don't like to mess with stuff like that but someone else mentioned that my ph might be too low for the RCS.Is it just better to supplement calcium then?

could i add the shells just for looks though?
