Second story?

I have decided after watching my fish that I not only have MTS but I have bottom feeder syndrome as well!

Has anyone tried to add a second story to their tank? How would I go about doing that? Thinking of using some 3/8 " thick clear plexi, and cutting three pieces to fit together making sort of a top with two sides "box" big enough to cover about 2/3 of the tank. Silicone together to make a step stool looking thing, and then placing 2" of gravel over the top and plants ect as if it were the 'bottom' of the tank. I have a 125 gal, six feet long so I could add 2' more of 'floor' space by doing this. Has anyone did anything similar? Ideas welcome. Would it look stupid? It would cut light to the bottom under it,,,not sure how to get around that.

Yea I dont know how you could provide light or circulation to the bottom "story". A powerhead could be added, but for the light....? The bottom story could be used for observing their nocturnal activity.

this wouldnt help with lighting, but i think youd get good water movement if you mounted a powerhead like this in pic # 2.
the 1st pic is how i think you want to do it....

if so, i think if you mounted a powerhead on the top portion, and drilled a hole thru your shelf to run a pick up tube with a prefilter for the power heard, you may be able to get away with it, like this

ah, that is a good idea about putting an intake through to the bottom story.

I just might make this a summer project after some more thought, right now I am painting my daughters room...

Would it look cool to make a shelf like thingy to run most of the length of the tank and make it say 6 inches or so?
the tank is 18 inches wide. Then I could put gravel on top of that, and plants in front here or there and make a cool hiding spot with good viewing.
Might think of that too.
