That might actually work, without even a risk of electrocution, since all electrical parts, including the motor are very well sealed. Thanks for the idea I've got a few 7gal or so tall buckets around
That is true, most electrical parts are pretty well sealed. I guess If one was really worried about being shocked, they could seal the electrical parts themselves with some aquarium silicone/sealant.
With the hole drilled in the intake is it difficult to get the filter to restart after a water change when the water line drops below the hole (if not pluged)?

No, during water changes I just pull the lever on the fluval up (and turn off the surge protector that the filters are connected to), that pretty much keeps the water contained in both pipes, so no need for re-priming when starting up the filter again.
