securing ram eggs

well that's cool..but I was under the impression that rams are generally good parents..tho some wigglers tend to get eaten.
have these rams paired up and spawned in the past??

prob not a bad idea to remove the first spawn.

can you treat the eggs with methulene blue?
it's used as an effective treatment for fungus.

a lot of times the eggs from your rams will turn white--they do not get fungus, they calcify.

I achieved best success when the gh got down under or at 7º-8º. With kh down around or below 3. The pH is less important than TDS's it seems to trigger the gonadotropic response required for breeding. The pH and gh do seem to play a critical role in getting successful egg fertilization and fry survival

That makes sense to me Sully....my GH and KH are pretty low (KH-70ppm...GH-60ppm)...yet my PH reads between 7.8-8.2. I have had great success with my rams spawning and raising fry on a regular basis....They take care of the eggs and fry for about 2-3 weeks. After that they apparently forget they're parents and eat the fry...lol.

I've only just decided to attempt to raise another batch. I removed the eggs into a fry tank and one batch has hatched...I have another batch from another pair that will most likely hatch out tomorrow sometime. So far so good.

I do believe though...if your rams generally take care of the fry up to the wrigglers stage...that it's easiest to remove them at that stage....when the parents gather them all into a small hollow that they scoop out of the gravel. It would be easy to syphon them out at that point. I didn't do that this time because there were other fish in the tank with the rams and I didn't want to chance them getting eaten before I got to them.
