When I set up my new tank, I would like to transfer as much bacteria to the new filters as possible for a hopefully very short cycle. I am ditching the old gravel so thats out. But I am wondering if I can just take one of my 2 AC sponges and cram it into on the media compartments on the Rena filstar.

also, if i do this should i also try biospira at the same time? Will the extra bacterial colonies make for a faster cycle?
 
i would just put one of the sponges in a media compartment. if its possible start with a very light bio load so you dont go through a mini cycle. ive never used bio spira so i couldnt give u any suggestions on that. what size is teh new tank and what do u plan on keeping in there??

The tank is a 75 gallon, i want to transfer the current inhabitants of my 29 gallon into it (3 SAE's, 2 false SAE's, 1 flame dwrf gour, 7 black skirts) plus in this 75 I want to add about 5-6 clown loaches and maybe a school of rainbowfish.

As far as light bio-load is concerned, will the current inhabitants of my 29 be considered a light bio load for the new 75? I just dont want my current fish to experience ammonia, nitrite poisoning when they get transferred. ill have the 29 running next to the 75 and just transfer them, lava rock, dirftwood, and a few plants.. Hopefully those extra items will also contain some bacteria.
 
just put all of the old media in the new filter and everything should be fine. i'd wait on the other fish for a few weeks at least. and FWIW 5-6 clown loaches is a bad idea in a 75 gallon tank. they can get to be about a foot or so. at most i would go with 2 clown loaches.

Thanks for the info but I have to disagree with you on the clown loaches. 75 is plenty big for a small school and they are slow growers. If they do get bigger I have a dusty old 125 in my garage so in a few years ill set that up.
