Self-Sustained breeding colony of????

Heterandria formosa?

I second White Clouds. They are coldwater but mine do fine in my 79 F tank. :)

And ofcourse, I would choose guppies over all the above (I love your user name) but I see you probably already keep guppies. :D

Coldwater or low end tropical (up to about 25C)

They do fine at room temperature, can live outside as long as it doesn't freeze, but can be kept with low temp tropicals (like guppies) too.

Ian

OK, thank you soooo much! i looked them up online, they seem like really pretty fish. Now, a second question is, could i move them outside for the summertime? or would the temperature get too hot?
If not, for indoor use, i am going to use a 29g or i am going to use a 106 qt (or bigger) rubbermaid container that will give them space to swim. As for filtration, what do they need? Like you said, your friend has his un-attended outdoors, so i'm assuming they dont need filter?

They do best with a filter. This was about a 50gal tank, jammed FULL of plants. You had to sort of push the plants aside to find any fish, and it got lots of water changes, every time it rained.

They dont need any exotic filtering, I had them breeding in a 5gal with an undergravel filter and a clump of java moss.

Not sure how hot your weather gets, but if goldfish can handle it, WMCs should be OK. If it's a small shallow sort of pond I would shade it from the direct sun.

RCS! not fish but still pretty cool

Ok, so here is my plan. Use the 29g with lots of java moss, boX filter- keeping it at around 72F.

About how many could i keep in their when they are breeding and all?

I WOULD BE INTERESTED IN KNOWING WHAT TYPE OF GUPPIES DO YOU BREED AND RAISE.... IF YOU LIKE YOU CAN RESPOND AT VINNYSANGELFISH@AOL.COM THANKS

Why is it that people who want personal replies instead of replies on topic so that everyone can benefit from them are also the ones who advertise their email so that they can be spammed to smithereens, are with AOL and post in all caps?

Two of these things are unwise, and two are bad manners.

Word to the wise:

1. The internet, like any other human interaction, has its etiquette. Posting in all caps is considered shouting, and shouting unnecessarily is considered rude everywhere. Besides, it's harder to read.
2. Asking people to direct advice just to you, and to go out of their way to do so by emailing you is also considered ill mannered.
3. Posting your email address on a forum guarantees more viagra, body part enlargement offers and dodgy Chinese prescription drugs for mail order than your inbox can cope with. Not to mention lots of enticing links which guarantee your computer will be a spambot within the day.
4. It's always people on AOL who need to be told this, for some reason. Always has been, always will be.

Hmm, I wonder why you haven't had luck with platies? Mine breed like crazy, although some more than others. Anyway, I like the WCM idea. I might like to try that myself one day. I bet a planted tankful of them would be pretty, especially the long-finned ones.

I dont know why either! in te past 5 yrs, i have probably bought like 2 dozen, and have had no success. I might just get some anyway just to try.... I have also thougt of mollies, but ik they need salt present in there water....

And for the WCM- they will just breed by themselves? I don't need to do anything special to induce spawning?
