hey huys i just got a small Senegal Bichir and was wondering if i could house some guppies or sunshines with him/her. Right now he/her is about 3 inches long.

i hate to breack it to ya but bichers are manly a solitary fish cuz sooner or later they'll eat whatever is in there with them so if you decide to keep him id be carful. for now he mite be ok with the guppys i would chose a faster fish since bichers arnt that fast they perfer to corner ther prey or sneak attack them. and when they get about up to 5-7inches they need to be by themself and they get very big usally around a foot for most bichers but some can get up to three (thats why they call them rope fish)

how long before my bichir willl get that big?? Should i be worried there is 4 gouramis about 2 inches long and an 1 1/2 inch tall? Oh yeah there is also a pleco in there.

First of all what size tank do you have him in? If it is smaller than 100g then you are going to need to get a bigger tank(I say 100g as an absolute minimum). And your guppies and gouramis will become after dinner snacks very shortly. I have bichir's and my biggest one when he was only 10 inches took care of a 7 inch bichir , it took him half a day to swollow it but he did it, never underestimate these fish. Btw they sit and wait for there prey to swim by and with lightning fast speed ambush them, well thats what they do in a big tank anyway.

P.senegalus senegalus generally reach 10-12 inchs as adults minimum recomended tank size is 50 gallons with a footprint of 36x18'' or bigger
While they are predators they are not overly agressive and should only be kept with other non agressive fish that are deep bodied -Anne

When i started out with my ornate bichir , i had two guppies, a dory, african butterfly fish, and a albino tiger barb. Soon i was down to the cory and the barb and butterfly. Then i was down to the barb and butterfly, he tried to eat the cory but couldnt swallow him all the way and just left him dead in the middle of the tank. That was when he was about 5 inches. Now the only original fish left is the butterfly wich he doesnt seem to mess with. I didnt see him eat the barb but he had been tryin for a couple months but the barb was too fast, i guess that barb came around the wrong corner one time too many >

hmmm bummer right now he is in my 10 gallon. But dont worry guys he wont be there for to long i have two 40g's, one 90g, and a 110g. Just was curious if for the time he is there i could get a pair of guppy's in there 2. Thanks . Oh and does anyone no the amount of time i have before hes big enough to get the gouramis???

Thats a loaded question! It could be anytime but would more likely be when the bichir gets a little bigger maybe 1 -2 months ,or you could be lucky and he wont be interested in them for a while longer. But you are going to need one of those bigger tanks. :) :soda:
