Hello all, I now have a 125 gallon standard 72" 18" 24" tank that houses four 5" goldfish and two 3-4" oscars, I have been worried about the temperature tolerances and how much waste they produce even at this size, I know I need to separate them, so I just locked up another tank i will be picking up tomorrow, It is a 36" wide, 36" tall and 28" deep, gallons? my question is should I move the goldfish into the new tank or the oscars? Also this tank will be against a wall beside the 125g, I plan on painting the back of the tank and was curious about color opinions?, I will be using play sand as substrate, with some lava rock and coral chunks.

Thanks for your opinions

I think that's 100 gallons. From what I've heard, not big enough for a full grown oscar. Or goldfish either, actually.

I would paint it black.

I think that the 100g would be ok for a couple of the goldies... depending on what type they were. A 110g is definitely not big enough for 2 full grown oscars.

Approx. 160 gallons (157.32)

Given the volume, its perfect for the two oscars. But in terms of the dimensions, 36" is rather short for them IMO. I'd put the goldies in there (as long as theyre fancies) and leave the oscars in the 125 gallon.

Put the 4 goldies in the new tank and leave the oscars in the 125. I would forget the lava rock and coral chunks as it can injure the goldfish.

100 gallons, with the proper filtration, would be fine for anything other than koi in my opinion, as long as you stick to 4 if they are comets or commons or shubunkins. If they are fancies, I would say you could even add one more.

I think they are standard gold fish[YT]9Tb8U59XaoQ[/YT]??

So this is a 160 gallon? the seller said it was a 110.......

The existing 125g is scratched up inside from having a reptile in it before i got it, can this be polished out? If so I may house all of them in the new tank for a couple days while i work on it. I also need to re locate the overflows also....

Can i move the water and some of the sand into the new tank and all be ok for a week or so?

I do 40% wc every week.

Thanks

yep commons and comets. They will do fine in a 125 gallon tank. If you want to you could even add some more in once the oscars are out. I'd suggest a one or two shub's. I've got 6 in my 125 gallon tank right now and I wouldn't even think twice about adding one or two more. Of course I change out 80% of the water weekly.

The Oscars definitely need to move to the bigger tank. Once they get big enough they will tear the goldfish apart (and maybe each other).

I think everyone pretty much covered how you should swap them.

For the back of the tank "I have the Krylon make it stone" spray paint in like a granite shade. Because it matches my stand, but I really wanted to do the green one. It will hide most of the algae growth that you get on the back of your tank and will be dark enough to make the fish colors really brighten.
