Serpae Tetra

What size tank and how many will you keep them in?

I think the bigger the tank and group, the less likely they will be agressive.

I just got rid of my serpae tetras, along with my rainbowfish. The two groups nipped at each other, at their own kind, and completely terrorized my panda cories, one died from this. My clown pleco, who always hid with these tankmates around, is now out in the open much more often now that they are gone. oh yeah, it is a 38 gallon tank, and I replaced them with keyhole cichlids.

based upon my experience, I would not recommend these fish... they were not enjoyable to me at all.

I had a group of 8 in a 38g that I had to get rid of b/c they nipped at my angelfish and tore the fins off a couple of cories- so I wouldn't get them if you were going to have cories or other passive fish.

I have a school of 5 in with a pack of very mean tiger barbs so they are kind of kept in check but the gang of barbs. they haven't harassed anyone not even each other they kind of try and all school together which is very funny to watch.

Two of my three are very complaciant, but the "leader" tends to push them around. He never does any damage, just a quick push to make sure they get he's in charge.

nice to mix with cardinals, IMO

I had 6 serpae tetras with about 30 cardinals, some cories, some kuhlies and a few other fish. The serpaes tried to chase the cardinals, but just succeded in making them school a bit. Cardinals wre way to fast to catch and they all look alike so it was hard to chase any one fish. The serpaes did tend to intimidate the cories sometmes, but it is a big tank and the cories could get away, as many cories as serpaes. The serpaes tried to stare down the kuhlies but they couldn't care less.

The serpaes are the most interesting fish in the tank, the males are constantly "sparring" which is lovely to watch, the females tend to stake out a corner of the tank and tease a male into the bushes back there occasionally. Be sure to have a nice open area for the sparring matches, it is like watching karate or kickboxing, but they never make contact, they just rush and twist away.

When I had an accident with lack of dechlorination, I was slow to replace the cardinals, but quick to replace the serpaes.
