I was given a 10 gallon tank and I'm finally ready to set it up.

It has a 25 watt Visi Therm heater that seems to work. Is this adequate for a 10?

Also, I have an AquaClear Mini filter. Again, is this adequate?

how many gallons per hour does it say it filters?
sounds like it could be okay, but the word mini makes me think it would depend on what type of fish you want for your tank

You'll want to upgrade both heater and filter. Get at least a 50 Watt heater, and a Aquarclear 150/30 would be good.

The Aquaclear mini is now called the Aquaclear 20. Which is supposedly good up to 20gal. I have a AC 20 on my 10 and it seems adequate, but I guess it would depend on what you are stocking the tank with. I also have the visitherm stealth 25w on the 10 and it keeps the water temp extremely steady.

Upgrade the heater and I think the filter is adequate depending of course on how you plan to stock it. However, if it were me, I would add another small filter, maybe another one just the same as you have and you will be good to go as far as filters and heating the tank is concerned.

Thanks for the feedback. I'll take stocking ideas! You folks have any ideas?

All the fish I am really attracted to need far larger accomodations (tiger barbs for example). I really love the look on neons or cardinals but am thinking of getting a larger tank in the future (50 - 60 gal) and having a large school of them in there.

I have a question about cycling. I'll never fishy cycle again! I got bad advice from a LFS and lost 5 neons. I am SO NOT into killing fish! I have a cycled established 5 gallon tank for my 5 year old with three guppies in it. Can I run the AquaClear filter on that tank to help "seed" the filter with beneficial bacteria? If so, how long would you advise it would take?

Why don't you set the tank up with just water and the heater for a couple days in the place you intend to keep it, put in a thermometer, and see how steady it keeps the water. If you are in a climate controlled house you may find it's adequate. If the tank is in a basement or something, you may want to purchase a new one.

But test it out first, may save yourself a few bucks :P

Oh I'll absoultely set it up and test that it maintains the water temperature correctly. I intent to do a non fishy cycle on the tank so I'll have plenty of time to do that.

My question was more one of whether or not a heater of that wattage would adequately heat a 10 gallon tank.

The friend that gave this set up to me isn't really a "pet" person so I don't know if the equipment is really the right stuff....so I come here to the experienced folks to ask (since the local Petco/Smart doesn't seem to have very educated staff and the LFS doesn't really impress me either!)

While it is logical that a fishless cycle cannot possibly kill fish during cycling, it is perfectly possible to cycle safely with fish, as each of my 3 10g tanks has proven. I have not lost fish to cycling issues, and suspect that your neon deaths could easily be attributed to poor stock, stress in the lfs or en route to the lfs...unless you have taken water chemistry readings that showed ammonia or nitrite levels that were dangerous to fish. Most people would say my 10g tanks are overstocked, with an average of 13 fish in each. With weekly water changes, my levels are 0 ammonia, 0 nitrite and 5-10 nitrate before the water changes! Yet my oldest tank was only started in March and I usually add fish as soon as the temperature has stabilized. However, I do have a lot of live plants in each tank, as well as using Prime conditioner, Stress Coat and ammo-lock in my filter for the first few weeks. I use AquaClear 20's in two of my 3 10 tanks and think it is a very good filter, if filled with decent media.

I am not trying to change your mind, but to set things straight - it IS possible to do a safe fishy cycle if you go about it the right way.
