In a large house with a big basement, I would convert the entire basement into a planted tank about 4' deep. The viewing area would be a flight of stairs into the centre, looking toward the walls, with maybe some passages to the more remote area of the tank :idea2:
Matak, you and I share the same sort of dream tank. Mine would be twice as deep though, and riddled with plexiglass (or something stronger if needed, but clear for viewing) passages so I could sort of walk around in it. A room say, 60' by 60' like this would be amazing to me. I'd keep it with tropicals too, but maybe some angels as well and lots of plants of course. Maintenance in a wetsuit maybe? Heh, what fun to dream about.

I'm not an expert, but I think that the conditions in such a tank would balance out. What I mean is, the temps created by the lighting would be offset by the coolness of the basement. If the tank was lightly stocked and heavily planted, it wouldn't need a huge amount of filtration. The only real problem would be keeping the moisture out of the rest of the house. Just think of the size of driftwood & rock formations you could create with a tank that size. Feeding a colony of Black Ghost Knifes by hand would be surreal. Plant pruning would be a blast too.

For Joe - Here's my tank with the stand and canopy...

...Nice!

Ok I've been thinking:

I know some of you have BIG dreams, but here is what I want.

1. Keep my 45 gal hex and put a large school of neons in it (my wife loves neons), get a small pleco and be done with it.

2. Get a 400-500 gal in wall tank with a small "fish room" behind to house all the working etc.
Sand bottom and good planting.
Run enough Ehiem filters to have it work
Get a variety of Cichlids for this tank
3. Get a 300 gal in wall tank with overflows and a nice sump other wall to "fish room" and have this set up as a reef tank and get some nice fish for this (have to get a couple of NEMOS for the kids)

Set up the fish room nice for use.

That would be my dream set up and when I win the lotto I'll do it ;)

Always liked the fish room idea. Instead of multiple tanks though I would make it a custom tank that would wrap around the entire perimeter of the room except for the door. The tank would be two to three foot deep and about the same width, front to back.

yes when it comes down to dreams its more the house built around the aquariums. retrofitting the kind I want would be to much work :D

I also want the fishroom with tanks through the walls for the enjoyment in various rooms around the the central tank room

My dream tank(s)

$$ being no object I would build my dream house and incorporate fish tanks in every wall.
Ever been to a fancy motel or a rental cabin where the fireplace is in the wall? When you are in the bedroom, you see one side of the fireplace, on the other side of the fireplace you are in the kitchen or some other room.

I would put fish tanks in almost every single wall of my home. Tanks that were wide enough to where you really couldnt see what was on the other side of the glass. You could have fish tanks in your bathroom wall that separated the master bedroom from the master bath. Mind you these would be VERY deep walls, and figuring into the equation a way of accessing these tanks for maintenance, but if we are dreaming, $$ is no object.

I would also have custom made tanks made into unusual shapes and designs and have them placed in different areas of the home. I think the look of so much water and acrylic would lend itself to a very modern European design.

Imagine a grand foyer with a HUGE 15 foot tall cylindrical tank made of acrylic or plexiglass. Thousands of gallons of water and your fish selection would be unlimited.

Ahhhhhhhhh.......what it is to dream!!!!!!!

How about an oceanfront or lakefront property with a basement lookout into say 10 to 30 feet deep of water? The ultimate aquarium.
