Setting a heater

Silly question but I have to ask. Since I've been using heaters I take them out of the tank if I want to change the setting. Is this necessary? Can I just unplug them and set them while they are submersed? I'm not really sure why I have this hangup or started doing things the way I did. Please advise.

Overly cautious maybe? Mine needs adjusting and I'm just going to put my hand in there and give it a nudge. I can't remember ever taking one out to adjust it.

As iguanamom said: just put your hand in and give it a nudge.

Some of them *are* hard to adjust though. If you feel better about it, sure, unplug it, but wait at least 5 mins for it to cool down, then take it out and adjust it.

My heaters are horizontal on the bottom of my tank, so if I want to adjust I either end up on my tippy-toes and soaking wet or unplugging and removing ;)

I have always just put my hand in and adjusted it. However here is MY disclaimer: Read and follow the directions that came with YOUR heater.

Thanks all. I feel a bit more confident adjusting underwater. Now the hardest part is to remember to plug it back in after working on the tank.
