So I'm going to help my uncle set up his 30g tank, Though I want to convince him to buy another because he poured a lot of chemicals before..

I don't really have experience with tanks over 30g, so I need your help!

To start, he needs a new filter. Suggestions? I'll probably get it off ebay cause its cheaper than stores.

Pool filter sand... non silica kind, right?

A new light maybe... his tank is 30" long. 90watts i'm thinking? Probably going to get a t5 light.

What else does he need to start?

He wants to grow plants eventually, but not yet.

RINSE IT OUT WELL and his tank will be fine. i clean my tanks when I get them with a salt and water paste works well and rinse well. I use a emperor 400 filter on a 30 G tank I have works well keeps it clean and clear. maybe you will need a heater, and sounds like your good to go.

Oh yeah, a heater. Totally forgot.

But I heard copper leaches into silicone, and he wants some snails in that tank. I don't think that will work out. :T

Forgot to mention, my uncle wants the filter to be a canister because he doesn't want it to be shown.

What kind of chemicals were used?

See you got 2 small tanks of your own. Dont worry the bigger the tank the easier it is to maintain. you could look on www.drsfostersmith.com for a good canister filter once you find one just shop around for the best price. Besides that you seem good to go.
