Setting up a Lake Malawi Tank

I have a feeding question...ok I bought Ocean Nutrition "Cichlid Omni Formula" flakes and Tetra Veggie "spirulina enhanced flakes. Now I don't normally by "Tetra" but they didn't have anything else that was veggie. The guy there said I should only feed the veggie flakes once a week..but the container says several times a week...I need advice as to how often I should be feeding it?

Now I will be buying frozen foods before long cause I like feeding that more then the flake also I have always feed blanched veggies (zuccini, peas, spinich) what would be best for these guys? As far as fresh and frozen foods. I was use to my big guys I had and bought frozen shrimp, scallops, beefheart, blood worms, krill, silverfish, ect...but these little ones I'm just not sure of.

I usually feed my AC's some sort of protien every other day(freeze dried blood worms/shrimp-every once in a while, I will feed 'em live ghost shrimp)I feed them a mix of spiriluna flakes/cichlid flakes everyday. As far as name brand, I haven't had any problems using the tetra flakes.

Thanks James! See, I know they like their veggies so when he said to just feed it once a week it just seemed odd to me. I don't want them to start trying to eat my plants and I know if I give them a fair share of veggie stuff they will be more likely to leave the plants alone..and I'd really like to keep the plants :)

So I took my 2 back and got 2 new ones!! He got them out of a different tank from a different breeder and I think these are correct! They are a little stressed from the ride home, but I think they look pretty good. BUT....YOU HAVE TO SEE WHAT ELSE I GOT!!!! I know I should of waited most likely but he just was soooooo nice looking I couldn't leave him there, I wanted to get all my sets in groups but like I said I couldn't leave him...anyway here are my new babies waiting to go in

hey G i feed my tangs well all fish for that matter a spirulina flake as breakfast everyday for them, and no problems aye, but you have to watch out for what a company is calling spirulina aye, ok so what i mean is this, some companies like tetra, aquaeon and a few others sell a veggie or a spirulina flake and if you read the ingredients the first one is usually fish meal and honest most foods for fish start with fish meal so i ask myself is this just a market tool and i would say yes, now there are a few brands out there that back their product up with actual spirulina as a first ingredient not like number 5 or 6 on the ingredients down the list and the same applies for human foods if you buy some can foods like beef stew and the beef is near to last ingredient on the list than you could suspect that you will hardly have any beef now that was an example and i dont buy beef stew, but you see where i am taking this so what brands do back there spirulina up well HBH veggie flakes first ingred is spirulina, NUTRAFIN first ingred is spirulina pacifica, OCFEAN NUTRITION first ingred is plant meal than spirulina and the mack daddy of them all is OMEGA ONE SUPER VEGGIE first ingred is whole kelp than spirulina so with omega your getting twice the veggies aye, i just feel that markets place foods up at a whim without the fish in mind hence hardly no regulations on fish foods, also this applies to spirulina pellets as well, there are alot of brands out there that simply list spirulina near the end of the ingred's list and you would be better off buying wardleys shrimp pellets aye, what has transpired in the last 10 years is that the aquarium industry has hit a pivetal era with how much money they can stick into a container to appeal to fashion line of fish food containers, be like eww mommy look at that can it has my fishie on it lets get it and the food inside is crap, sorry so long i guess i struck a nerve with me on feeding my fish the best possible foods out there, take care BTW those labs look pretty sweet.. on a side note you get what you pay for..

Thanks for all the info Pit. Yes, I do realize different brands have different quality and I will buy much better eventually...but the only type of veggie flake they had was this one..I looked and yes the first ingred. is fish meal on the veggie flakes. There are other fish supply stores in that town..I just do not know the town well and that is where I was.

Thanks so much for the info though, it is very good!

Nice Labs and Ahli. Hows everyone working out so far?

AHHH, CRAP! Ya know what I did Ibr....I had a "moment" I guess, I have looked at and talked about so many I got mixed up when there...he is a Ahli I think I was thinking Acei when I was there!!! He is a Hap which I had looked at and wanted before I realized they weren't from Lake Malawi!!! OMG, but he is sooooooo gorgeous, do you think I can keep him and just take out one of the peacocks I planned? He can be the "odd ball" of the tank??? Just look at him and his colors!!!
I usually take my list with me when I go...but I wasn't planning on getting any other fish this trip and left it at home GAH I'm such a dork sometimes!!!
