Setting up a Lake Malawi Tank

Leave the ugf plates in, they won't hurt, I know some peeps with ac's and reefs that used them instead of eggcrate.

OK..cool!!!

I sooo wanna get my sand in, but I want to wait until I have more rock because I want my base rocks to go in first before I put the sand in..then they wouldn't be able to dig under them and make them unstable. Does that make since?

I agree with ibr...It's just for support. The sand will fill any voids so the debris would really have a hard time getting down under the plates. Nice cleaning job btw. I have a couple "emptys".... care to help me clean em' sometime ;).

Thanks Dog!! Ummm, well maybe "someday" ;)

Oh...hey ibr3ak, I was going to ask you do your cichlids leave your java fern alone? I was thinking about adding some java fern and maybe moss but I wasn't sure about it?

OMG this thread is driving me nuts....I may have to setup a new tank too!!!!!!

Aren't your rocks gonna be on top of your sand like this......

The planted Mbuna is just a tease LMAO!!!

Well, yes..but the first layer (the base) I want to be touching the bottom, so they will stay stable. If there is no sand under them for the fish to dig under and around I am hoping the "pile" will stay stable. So I will set my base rock up..then add the sand, then I can make my caves and piles of rock on the base.

OOOOh, you are a BRAT! :silly:

See, if this was what I were to use for my bottom layer, I would add it like this then put the sand in...so there is no sand under my base. :)

I've had to remove the ferns recently and replace with fake silk swords, as far as the fish went they were nipping on it at first and then left it alone, my problem was that there wasn't enough light even for the low light plants (only a single 24watt bulb, and a 50/50 at that) to keep them going, which in your case with that sw setup would probably be more than fine.

I see...I will most likely at least give it a try. I wont be keeping the SW lights on there, I have a different one back in IL that I will most likely switch to...but it will be enough for a few low light plants.

Oh, and just to update on my thoughts...I believe I am going to leave the driftwood out.

Those are some nice looking fish!!!!
