Setting up a new home for my Oranda

I have an Oranda in a 29 gallon tank. He is kept company by three common goldfish, two plecos, and four red minor tetras. He's been in there for months now, and is very happy and healthy at about three inches long.

OK – I was very polite in my first post to you, Whistler. Most probably because it was my first time reading your advice, you are pretty new here, and you responded to a dead thread. However, in this thread I would like to point something out... your fish are not healthy and thriving just because they've been in this situation for a few months now. Alive does not equal healthy or thriving. While you haven't come out and said "try this, it can work for you", that is basically your message in disguise.

I know there are a lot of people on this site that would say this is an overstocked tank. The simple fact is that we as humans understand relatively little about fish, their needs, or how to treat them.

I have no clue how to say [what is next] tastefully, so I'll just say it. That is the biggest bunch of bull I have ever come across on the Internet in regards to fish. How can you say that we have little understanding of fish and what their needs are? You might as well slap us all in the face... everyone who attempts to educate him or her self. Just because one is ignorant on a topic doesn't mean there is little known about the given topic.

I know I came across as harsh, but your comments were so outlandish that there was no justifying with most of it.

Aaarg - I knew that was going to happen as soon as I read that post!

Hm - well - in my opinion that tank is definatly overstocked, and also, Im surprised anyone would say that we dont understand our fish very well. However I appreciate your honest response to my question. Friendly warning - listing the specs of your tank will almost always cause several raised brows so be prepared!

FishGuy - thanks for all your help on this topic and for restraining your response from what you were probably thinking.

I think that now's a good time to end this post please.

Thanks a bundle.

Me and the other poster have been PM'ing. I was more upset that they were posting that as facts, and hence insinuating it can work for everything. I think things are straight now, but thanks for trying to calm us down. Things get worked up quickly at times.

I've devised a simple mathematical formula. Works every time.

commom goldfish + oranda + 29g = bad idea

goldfish + red minor tetras + 29g = bad idea

goldfish + plec + 29g = bad idea

The 29g can also be substituted from the equation and it still holds true.
