I can not speak for most folks in the U.S. but i know here in good ol Kentucky our education system when i was a young one didn't really cover the metric system and everything else other countries were doing. That was in the 70's..

If they did i wasn't paying attention because i kept messing with little susie in the back role of the classroom, and a litre meant we were going to get a 2-liter of soda hehehe..

Good times its just easier for some of us to say gallons and or inches..
