:help:

I just picked up a used tank from Craiglist that came with two Eheim 2217 canister filters. They currently have filter pads and "noodles" in them for media. They have been unused for a couple years.

Any tips on steps I should take to make sure that all is working well before I hook them up? I wouldn't want to make any mistakes with these because I don't have the money to replace them.

Should I keep all the media in the filter? Should I replace the pads? Any other tips for regular maintenance?

Thanks!

i would like to know too, i have a bid on one on ebay

I would recommend that you check all of your O rings and/or gaskets. They should be soft and supple. If they have any crack, discoloration, or warping, they should be replaced. I would probably replace all of them anyway if they had been sitting unused for several years, but I ma particular about my O rings. I would not be concerned about the noodles and pads if they seemed to be in good condition.

Meh, I would just go ahead and rinse everything out. Obviously if the impellors and whatnot are cracked that change those. However, the filter materials can stay.

Thanks for the responses. I need a couple things like an intake strainer, Prime, etc. so I'll add a set of O-rings and a couple course and fine pads to my order to hit the $50 free shipping at Big Al's.

I'll plan on changing the O-rings and rinse out the media in tap water (bacteria has to be long dead anyways) then I'll hook up in the tank and start cycling once the stand is refinished.
