Setting up Low-Light Moss Tank - Need Suggestions

Moss is a very hardy plant, it will probably even grow at ambient room light. 30w over 15 gallons is fine for most low light plants.

well i guess my question is...should I reduce my lighting down from 40W to 30W (i.e. will this help with my algae issues) or will this be detrimental to the plants without providing very much gain (again, i.e. decreasing algae growth, in particular BBA and brown algae)

I think wood would have a distinct advantage over slate as a mounting point. not only will the moss attach better, but it will leech into the water and provide slow release of nutrients. also, java moss is lame, if you can avoid it, go with any other kind of moss. in the end you'll be happier.

what kind of ficture are you running? The spirals have a lot of retrike so they tennd not to be as bright as other bulbs of similar wattage. If I was running 30w of t5 or straigt bulb cfls, then there would be considrably more light.

they're spiral cfls. 2 x 20W

as for the ground cover issue, i think i'm going to try using the mesh concept that is used for moss walls, but just lay it on the substrate. i've seen this done by other people and it seems to work out ok.
