Hello everyone...I got myself a 30 gallon tank + air pump + heater (all seem kinda old to me) last night for $30 which I thought was a decent deal...Today I went to my "lfs" and got some prices on some "parts" and this is what I came up with...

If I go all new...
Power Head $52.99
Filter $36.99
Air Pump $31.99
Heater $27.99
Under gravel Filter $31.99

total of $181.95

my question is would I need both an under gravel filter and a regular filter...or could I get away with just using one? I'm starting school in September and I would like to be able to save as much cash as I can...whats everyone's experience with a under gravel filter?

I've compared to some Starter kits but I would like try to make this tank more of a permanent thing than just a hobby...I've been at this fish thing for a year a half now and I'm already on tank #3 now :)
 
For a 30 gallon I would just use a good HOB, like an aquaclear. The other stuff is not needed...the air pump (only if you want an airstone, but most of the time not needed), the powerhead or the undergravel. Probably would want a heater.
