Setup suggestions for an undrilled tank

I kept saltwater reefs almost 20 years ago, I'm sure the science/hobby has advanced since then. My fiance recently scored a 46G corner tank/stand/hood, large protein skimmer, LARGE pump, couple powerheads, etc. for $20, and we decided we'd go salt with this one (we have 14 tanks running now, mostly fresh, 2 brackish). The tank is undrilled. Should I drill it and put in an overflow? If not, is it still efficient to run a skimmer box over the side to a sump, or are there better rigs these days. Also included was an Aquaclear 300 that I imagine I could use for a small refugium, or just bio-media, etc. Are fluidized bed filters still suggested? Other suggestions?

Drilling is up to you, but the (pre-filter) overflow boxes are pretty good these days. One of the best is those found at lifereef.com. The U-tube design itself is the better type to have, regardless of where you buy one. Ours has been running almost a year now with no problems, depsite frequent power outages and blinks where I live. I've had to clean it once since I started it. The one LFS has one running on a 180g that's been going for > 10 years without incident.

There's quite a bit of info available on converting Aquaclear filters into mini-refugiums. An internet search should provide you with some easy to find DIY plans.

I don't know much about fluidized bed filters, other than what I see about them listed in catalogs. I certainly can't comment on how much they are used.
