Severely injured water sprite

New Years Eve I bought a potted water sprite and I had to run home (literally, the transmission went out in my truck so I ran home). I had the water sprite in a bag under my arm and when I got it home the plant was nothing but mush. I picked off the dead plant, put the pot with its tiny remaining leaf into my tank and hoped for the best. Today I stuck a root tab in the pot since nothing has really happened. Is there any hope for it?

I would say yep, there's still hope. I have had plants that were nothing but a root stub grow and become great looking plants. What kind of set up do you have(i.e. lights, ferts, CO2)?

Water sprite is evil..it grows and grows, no matter what you do. In my book it is comparable to duckweed. So, judging from my experience, you should have a nice plant in less than a month..

i would let it float on top. i got some plants in and about 2 weeks later i found it just floating there. never saw it until i was moving things around. it went from a couple inch to over a foot tall in little over a month.

I have no setup for plants, only about a watt per gallon in my 20, but my tank is by a window so it gets some sunlight (very little algae for some reason). Java fern, moss, and a banana plant all survive in there, although their growth has been very slow. Because of water sprites reputation (thanks Blue for pointing that out lol) I thought I might have a chance of growing a taller plant in this tank.

So it might survive, huh? That's good news.

So I should take it out of the pot and rinse it, then float it?

For those who helped, just wanted to offer an update. All the old foliage rotted away and my water sprite has finally sent up a little shoot! It looks like it survived the ordeal. I never did get around to taking it out of its pot. lol

Is there rockwool in the pot? If there is I would reccomend taking it out because it can throw the water chemistry off and cause problems. If not then it can stay in the pot as long as you want it too. I have seen some tanks where there is no substrate and all the plants were planted in pots which could be moved around easily and with little mess. It was kind of cool. Glad the water sprite is bouncing back.

see.... you cant kill it. i dont ever keep the plants in the pot.
