I just got a breeding pair of Severums, rotkeil on monday and theyre already laying eggs. I separated the parents and eggs from the rest of tank. theyre in a 125 G with 2 syns about 10-8", 9" chocolate, 4" bahia red, and 12" pleco. Should I wait about 24 or 48 hours, then take the portion of pot she laid eggs on and put it in a 10 g by themselves?? I really want to keep these. I have succesfully spawned cons b4, but i figure this is a dif situation. also what do these go for at about dime sized to LFS about $2-3???

OK 2 hours later the eggs are all gone?!?!?!?!!?! what could have happened, its just the parents on that side. Would one of them have eaten them???????? Are they mouth brooders?????? help me out please!

Yes, its possible that one of the parents ate the eggs.

Kind of what I figure. Could they have been spooked by me inserting the divider, or do you think it's just an egg eater? Is it usually the male? Also, for the next time, do the males fertilize the eggs immediately after they're laid?

If the parents feel threatened, they will eat the eggs, especially a first spawn. Don't worry....new surroundings will often freak them out. They will spawn again. When I have spawned severums, I have left the fry in with them in a (fake) planted tank. But you can move the eggs to a separate tank with some gentle circulation if you want to. And, yes, the eggs are fertilized right after they are laid.

I just acquired 6 quarter size Rotkeils myself to grow out for breeding. I paid $4.69 a piece direct from a distributer. Most retailers will want them at at least 50 cent size, which you might be able to get about $4-6 for them, provided the store owner knows what they are. If there is a fish or cichlid club near you, you can sell them at the auctions. Adult rotkeils in the San Francisco Bay area go for about $40-50 retail.

Yes I have danced with the devil, and yes it burned me bad!!!!! I have 26 sev fry gold , green and rotekiel? Can you tell me how to tell difference between rotekiel and green sev fry????
