sex id on rams pls

From http://hjem.get2net.dk/Best_of_the_Web/blue rams.html

Generally, both genders of Rams I've had, display almost irridescent colors of red, blue (especially if you view then from a 45% angle), green, black, tourquoise, yellow, and orange. There is some 'controversy' as to whether German Rams are sexually dimorphic. Aquarists who have kept many varieties will be more apt to say that they are becoming less and less dimorphic. In any case, there are some main differences between the two genders.

Male

The male will have long black colored 'spikes' extending vertically out from the tip of the dorsal closest to the head.
The dorsal is most often pointed at the tip facing the caudal fin.
The male is larger; the pelvic fins are larger.

Female

The female will have a pinkish colored pelvic region.
The dorsal is rounded at the end.
There are definitely exceptions to this rule but in general it is the most accurate. Since Rams are becoming increasingly more diverse in coloration and size, some aquarists hold opposing views. Ie. there are Blue Ram females with longer dorsal rays (like the Bolivian Ram), similar to many males. As far as I know, Rams most closely connected to the wild form, often show blue spangles/dots on the black spots on each side of the middle of the body. If they contain blue spangles/dots, it most likely signifies a female, however, I have had males with blue spangles on the black spots on both sides of the fish as well (european morphs).

Well, you have two different rams, and a pair at the same time!lol

The first pic is of a male blue ram. The second pic is a female german blue ram.

Trust me, neither of your rams is a Bolivian, I can tell by looking at the tail. Bolivians have pink highlights on the top and bottom of their tail, and an all pink anal fin.

Blue rams and German blue rams should be able to breed because they are the same fish, just different strains (i.e. gold and zebra angelfish). If they actually will is a different matter, because I think color and markings plays a big role in German blue ram breeding.

your right, saw some bolivians at my lfs, looks differant from the ones i have, i got me two of them, hopefully its a pair, the shop wasn't sure.

Oh cool, you're lucky. I've always wanted a pair of Bolivians. Their tails look really cool with the pink highlights. Here's to hoping you get a pair :thm:

Just curious though, are you putting them in the same tank with your rams? If you are, make sure the tank is large enough, and has quite a few hiding spaces, since rams can become quite aggressive with one another, especially between males.

yea, notice that too. not sure what to do, love them both. i have a 29g heavy planted with a cave or two, they could stay from each other for a little while, but if it keeps it up, i do have a 20 long.

Thanks for the info
