I know that from the lack of blue blotches on the gill plate this fish should be male, but from the fact that it looks full of eggs and has a massive spawning tube I'm starting to think that it's female.

Bear in mind this fish came from someone in the UK, so God alone knows how inbred the line it came from is! I've read that in some strains females don't have clear gill markings.

Thought I'd get some more opinions. Whaddaya think?

This is a female. They typically have less speckling than the males. (you had it backwards.)
 
female, she is ready to lay eggs also :)

No he's correct- a male may have more speckles over all, but not on the lower half of the gill plate.

I don't know what's up w/ your fish Jax. :p: Guess s/he didn't read the manual.

Well the general consensus so far (I've posted on a few different forums) is that the fish is female.

Either that or it's a particularly well endowed male! :p:

jessicar613 - I don't know what's up with the fish either, but I ain't never seen a male fish look so full of eggs!

I'm gonna introduce it to my confirmed male in the next couple of weeks. Guess I'll get my answer that way for sure that way!
 
Maybe hes constipated and bloated.:eek:

If it werent for the spawning tube I would of went with male. How big is this fish? Its upper dorsal fin isnt very long either, another trait of a female.
 
The fish is 4" long. Definitely in a position to breed and definitely not constipated/ bloated.

I agree about the dorsal fin being very 'female'. No real fin extensions anywhere except the ventral fins and even they're not very long.
