I noticed today two of my bala's swimming erradically together side-by-side for 2-3 min in what I can only figure to be mating (I've never seem them do this before). I am considering setting up my 10g just to house the mother (they are both only 2.5 inches), but I have no idea how to tell which is which? Anyone out there know, or are bala's impossible to tell?

OK. Quick biology lesson. Teleost fish do not mate and then lay eggs later like birds. They employ external fertilisation, which means that they lay unfertilised eggs which the male then fertilises in the water. Setting up a tank just for the mother isn't going to achieve anything. She can't spawn on her own.

Quick lesson about Bala sharks. Yours are babies. They grow to around 14". Being carp, they may be sexually mature at around 7". But not 2.5".

You may get them to spawn spontaneously in a very large tank. But baby sharks are not going to spawn, definitely not isolated females, and most certainly not in a 10 gallon tank.
