Sexing Blue Dempsey? + Growth Update *Pics*

re

Yes I love my BD as well. However I'm wanting to try breeding. I sure hope mine is a male because it's getting along well with the standard female. Time will tell good luck with your BDs. I think you should loose the gold fish for a blue dempesys home. lol

I called Jeff Rapps he says the Standard Dempseys with the blue Dempsey jeans arnt sold commercaily. So I guess I have to make my own. Maybe if I get past step one and you deside to go in this direction I can send you a few. I may need to swap my Blue dempsey if I get that far so I don't have inbreeding with the dempseys with the blue jeans. I may even give you a few fry form the end result as well if yours don't turn out. Either way I hope I find some one to work with.

Ive raised regular male and female dempsy's in the past and if its just a coloring difference between regular and BD's then theses seem to be growing exactly as you point out. the shorter, more pudgy looking BD is female and the longer and thinner one is male.

Thanks for the input icepack. There are other differences between normal JD's and BD's; i.e. temperment, hardiness, and supposedly adult size. I haven't been able to find a lot of people that have adults. But my guess is that they reach the same size.

re

Well it seems I have a female then.
This messes up my plans for the moment hopefuly I can get a normal male.
Thanks.

I don't think you can tell male and female of BD by finage alone as they are different from normal Dampsey. Their finage is deformed to various degree and the earlier BD breed had more defomity than the newer breed and hard to keep alive. I lost one a couple years ago after having him for a few months and many people reported the same problem. About a year ago I acquired two new BD and they have grown to healthy 3 inch size and I hope they will make it. I can sex normal Dampsey with 100% accuracy when they reach 3 inch size by their finage and body color. But I won't have any confidence with BD because their color and finage aren't normal and I have no standard to compare with. Their body color can change with mood, sometime very uniform blue and sometime with dark bloches and their finage aren't as long flowing as normal dempsey.

You're right I guess. I've already noticed the large ammount of variation when it comes to finnage, shades of blue, etc.... But I just figured that the ammount of difference between my two juvies could be pointing to some sexual dimorphism.

Though the variation within the species doens't rule out that I have a male and female, it does make it less likely. I'll have to see as they grow older.

I'm always looking to get in contact with blue dempsey owners.....they seem to be few and far between.....(at least when it comes to those who have been able to grow the dempseys to adult sizes).

I'm plan on getting1 or 2 blue jack dempsey's with adding 1 regular or 1 red jack dempsey or 1 pink jack dempsey. your two news one look great.

Red and Pink Dempseys? Do you have a link? There is another thread here stating that red dempseys dont exist or are dyed. I would love to see one if they really exist.

By pink, are you talking about gold dempseys? They do look sort of pink in the right light.......I've never heard of a red dempsey, although it's highly feasible that a gold could be dyed red, which would make me sick to see.
