Sexing bolivian rams

Bolivian rams are very difficult to sex until you see them spawning. From what I've read, there are quite a few theories but nothing really concrete. Check out www.apistogramma.com, the forum there has some very knowledgeable people who keep and breed bolivians.

A google search will help you find out how to sex german blue rams.

Very difficult to look at a single bolivian and sex it. If you are looking at a tank full, then the one with the brightest colors is the male, and the one with the dullest is female. Look at Anal fin (more rounded=female more pointed=male), same thing with tips of the tail fin. Pectoral fins in males will have longer extensions. None of these by themselves is 100%. You have to look at all the factors holistically. Finally, if your in a lfs. Hunker down a couple feet from the tank and watch them for a good 5/10 minutes. You should be able to identify a dominant male by the way he holds position and defends a small territory. The dullest colored fish that is hanging out around his territory, and being chased the least (not at all, just the least) will probably be a female. Sorry if that's no help.

Blue Rams. Males will have very high extension of dorsal fins compared to females. They will be bigger and more colorful. Fin shape indicators discussed above often hold true for BRs also. A fish with a pink belly is 100% a female.

I'm no expert on rams, but this is just what I've observed from keeping a few and watching a bunch of lfs tanks for long periods.
