I recently got a pair of juvi convicts.I thought I got a male and female, but now I am not so sure. One is constantly chasing and nipping at the other. When I got them the were about an inch long and are now just over 1 1/2 inches. At first everything was good, but for the last 2 weeks or so,one is really harassing the other. One has little bits of orange on it's belly, this is the one being picked on,which I thought was a female. The other has no orange, but its dorsal fin has a slight hint of blue in it,and a little blue stripe on his side.I have a pic of what I thought was the female, the one with the orange belly. What do you think?Could I have 2 males,or do I have a male and female that are just going through growing pains?

Yes, that's a female, it sounds like normal convict breeding behavior - Fight, spawn, fight, spawn, etc. It may be that he's ready to breed and she's not yet, but I would just give it a bit of time, convicts can take a bit of harassment and nipping in stride.

Thanks.I can't get a descent shot of the other one(little booger won't sit still)but he has hardly any coloring, just the white and black stripes, and I am pretty sure it is a male.

Lucy is correct about the one in the photo being female. When she is ready the colors will really blossom out. Not all females are as well defined as the one in the picture and it may take a bit of watching to be sure. I have 1 female that has only a small faint pink blotch on her. There is no doubt about the sex as she has some wigglers she is guarding with the male being close as well.

Ok,after about 1/2 hour of taking pics, this is the best I can get, what do you all think,is this a male?
