Hey Friends !

Hope all is well and great there !

I'm planning to thin out the frontosa population in my tank - basically I want to keep 1 male and 2 or a max of 3 females. These guys are about 3" average. I notice that 4 of my fronts are about 4", growing larger and faster than the others and have claimed caves for themselves. They stay hidden almost always (while the others swim freely) and come out only for feeding or an occasional swim around the tank. The colors on these guys are also more intense than the others. Can i be sure that these guys are males ?

Then there is this 7 stripe guy, who i feel is a male but couldnt claim a cave for himself. He is also growing fast and is the bluest of all the fronts in my tank.

About 2 or 3 fronts are pretty small, just touching the 3" size and are'nt appearing to grow at all. Basically all of these fronts were almost rescued because the lfs guy had kept them in very poor conditions... I have a feeling that these 'dwarfs' are already stunted... They had a lot of mooning and bad fins, but after a few months of proper care, clean alkaline water, daily food of NLS, Dainichi, Live earthworms, they are beginning to look better than before. The mooning is almost gone except on 1 of them who is the smallest and is not showing any growth at all...

Also wanted to mention here that I got these guys from 2 different people, to avoid / minimize in-breeding, if they ever breed for me...

Anyways, I want reduce the population now and would like to keep just a trio or 4 of them.

Just wanted to know if there is any way that I can sex them now, based on their behavior and appearance as i guess they're too small to be vented. If yes, then kindly guide me on the same or if its not possible, then please guide me on which ones do i keep and which ones are to be removed...

Kindly advice and guide me friend...
Thanks a lot for reading...

The only 100% way is to vent. Any other method is basically guessing to be honest, so I would wait until they are older.

Any reason why you are thinning the population? These guys really do best in large groups.

^ Vent the fish at a good size..

00 = male
0o = female

Hi Friends,

I want to keep them all but I know that I can never keep them all happy in this tank, as it is small for them. That is why I have to thin out their numbers...

Please guide me Friends...
Thanks and Regards

Kush, can you upgrade the tank? IMO a 55gal will be small for even 4 adult fronts.

It would be much better to get a larger tank instead.

I agree. This way you can keep all the fronts and that will be better for them.

Hi Friends,

Its really not that I want to keep them in a small tank or I cant afford a bigger tank. I can always save some money or borrow it from somebody else. Its just that I dont have space for a bigger tank. I cant even keep a 5 feet tank instead of this 4 feet tank. I know it would have been great because I could have kept them all and I wouldnt have to have all these 5 filters running on this tank...

Anyways, I will always try and it will remain my life's ultimate dream to be able to own a 8 foot or 10 foot tank with a beautiful colony of Frontosas.. I hope it comes true someday before my life ends...

Anyways, thanks for all the replies friends - again, I really know that you are trying to help me but its so sad that I'm not able to make it happen...

I understand that, Kush! Just keep doing the great work you are performing on them and who knows what sweet surprise the future can bring!

Thanks a lot for the kind words and wishes, Efors - Yes, I really wish and hope that I'll be able to give these guys a much larger and more beautiful home in future. May be I will be able to do it in time...

Thanks again for all the kindness and for having patience with me. Really appreciate it a lot.

Lots of Regards to all,
Kush
