i have 6 cichlids and sometime the seem to shake their bodies extremely fast, almost like they are vibrating. does anyone know what they are doing? is this a normal thing?

All my cichlids do this. Kenyi, Acei, Electric Yellow. It's pretty fun to watch. My question would be, is it only males that do this? I can tell my male Kenyi are the only ones to do it. I have what I think/thought was a female Acei doing it, the male definitely does. I can't tell male/female in the Electric Yellow's.

My male cichlids are the shakers; the females will flirtatiously "dance" around them. Must be the male mating call equivalent.

LOL.. I see this in my female rainbows when they were trying to court the only male.. I think this is very normal behaviour and you might be in for some breeding action...

yeah i'm setting up a friend's cichlid tank, and all the cichlids are an inch long or smaller, and the biggest kenyi shakes at the others. it scared me the first time, but then i remembered that this is fairly normal. I dont know if the big one is male or female though (how early should i be able to tell?)

It could be that your ammonia levels are high. Are they scratching?

The do scratch themselves on the rocks every now and then but this is very different. my test kit shows ammonia levels at 0.

Thanks everyone for your help!
