nice pair of Brown-banded Bamboo Sharks :)

How would you transport a blacktip?

Blacktip Reefs (as well as all requiems & Smoothhounds) are shipped in boxes/containers that are usually large enough to allow the shark to swim around in. This is the main reason - you find small pups in LFS - because of their smaller size they are easier to ship.

If shipping container is rectangular or oval shaped - then it's width is at least 1.25 times as wide as the shark is long, and the length is about 3-4 times as long. If round - then the container will like have a diameter that at least 2-3 times the shark's length. But the water depth is usually only about 9-12" deep. As example - a small smoothhound (About 10-12") might be transported in a 35-40 gallon container. Or a small Blacktip Reef (at 14") might be transport in a 65-75 gallon container.

Juvenile benthic sharks - i.e. Horn, Bamboo, coralcats, wobbies & epaulettes are even easier to transport - since they are often shipped in boxes that may be about only 25% wider than the shark is long. And in most cases small pups of these species can be transported in a 5 gallon container.

Hope that helps.

Thankx for all the great info. Now that I know it is possible I would love to have a bamboo shark or one of the smaller species. Would a 500G SW tank be big enough for one?

A 500 gallon tank would certainly be large enough to keep a shark in. It just depends on the tanks dimensions & the species. A 500 gallon Aquarium - with the dimensions 96"(8 ft) Long x 48"(4 ft) Wide x 25" (2.08 ft) Tall would be great for on of the smaller "aquarium" sharks such as -

- The Marbled Catshark (Atelomycterus macleayi) - grows to about 24"
- The Coral Catshark (Atelomycterus marmoratus) - grows to about 28"
- The Gray Bamboo (Chiloscyllium griseum) - grows to about 30"
- The White-spotted Bamboo (Chiloscyllium plagiosum) - grows to about 36"

A 500 gallon of these dimensions should be consider to the minimum tank size for the following Species -

- The California Horn Shark (Heterodontus francisci) - grows to about 38-40"
- The Brown-banded Bamboo (Chiloscyllium punctatum) - grows to 40"
- The Epaulette Shark (Hemiscyllium ocellatum) - grows to 42"
- the Japanese Wobbegong (Orectolobus japonicus) - grows to 42".

There is a black tip shark thats about 2 feet long in a local LFS near me that I always go into. They have a sand shark in it too, I think its a 1,000 gallon setup. Very cool to just sit and watch, its worth it just going to look even if you don't buy anything =)

I would have to get my shark online as there is no LFS near me!:wall: I really like the brown banded bamboo shark or the marbled cat shark. I just have to wait until my wallet is a little fuller before I can have one. :) A wobbegone would be really cool too!
