i got a big boy from petco for free and he is a good size bigger than the female. so i put him in and she starts biting the rocks vertical side. is she trying to clean it to breed on or what she is also swimming around him flaring like on him and going over and under and around. does this mean she wants to breed.

I'm not familiar with your tanks/ setups. From a quick glance at your posts I gather you have a Convict? Or a Severum? In any case what you describe sounds to me like an established fish ( perhaps the only cichlid? ), and have introduced a new fish into it's territory. The old fish will normally try to remove the intruder even if it is a member of the same species and of the opposite sex. Since you have a female, if she were interested she may test the male anyway to ensure he's tough enough to mate with. This may involve gill flaring and jaw- locking.
The best way to attempt what you're attempting IMO would have been to set up a divider so the female gets a chance to get used to the male's presence and the male gets a chance to acclimate first and then establish himself. Less stress for both fish and especially the newcomer.

yes they are convict but the funny thing is she showed a little aggression at the beginning and now they dont try to fight or any thing. m the way the tank is set up it used to be heavily planted but when i introduced him he immediately started taring it up so now the tank has one rock in the middle its the rockes that have a hole in them.

and if you look at my profile pic the side of the rock is what she was cleaning or doing something to. the left side

They should do just fine. The phrase " breed like Convicts " is really truth. I wouldn't expect to keep plants with them. I suggest the divider to allow the new fish time to acclimate. Cichlids can be rough on each other and the new fish is at an extreme disadvantage. Better to give it time to acclimate and allow the other fish to get used to the idea of the new addition.Just a better chance of success.

oh now they are together in the back of the rock the girl is digging the guy is behind and looks like hes blocking a side so the girl only has to watch one side

just a heads up

around here we call convicts THE STD fish because they are so prolific, get ready for lots of babies

ive bred them before but i just found it so amazing they didnt fight. all they did was just started digging it seemed
