Shimming on carpet?

Hi all,

I was positioning a new 20-long in what I thought was a good spot but, when I checked it with a level, I discovered a lean toward the wall. (The front of the tank is about 1/3rd of a bubble high.) So, I did some searching about shims here and was thinking of heading to Home Depot to get some, when it occurred to me to double-check and see if there was anything special I should be aware of about shimming on plush carpeting, such as settling once the water is in.

Of course, I can always move the tank, but this is a nice spot....

You're shims would be fine. Just squash the carpet down with them when you do your leveling. You may have some settling but not enough to cause any issues. You could also use a piece of plywood under the whole stand, cut to fit and shim on that.

You didn't mention what kind of stand you are using If it is metal I wouldn't worry about a third of a bubble since it is front to back.Most tanks built today can handle much greater difference than that.If it is a wood stand shimming works fine.

It's a hardwood cabinet-style stand. Last night I moved it closer to the wall to see how much space I needed for the filter and noticed the lean was reduced by about half -- i.e., about a fifth of a bubble or so. I think on a small tank like this it shouldn't be a problem, so I may skip the shimming.
