Shipping Fish via USPS

I have received fish on multiple occasions through USPS without any issues or even any DOA's, so I was surprised to get a message telling me that the BN fry I was expecting were killed by a disgruntled postal worker.

Quick update, it sounds like the fish may have just been stunned. Fingers crossed they all make it.

Complaint sent to USPS.

That's ridiculous that they shook the box like that! What a jerk! Blatant disregard for someone's property, is probably the kind of jerk who plays soccer with packages marked fragile.

You can print out the stuff about shipping fish, etc, and bring a copy of it with you to the post office. I just shipped some assassin snails and when they asked me if there was liquid in there I told them there was water. I also told them it was packaged according to the instructions on the USPS website. They had no problem accepting it.

Definitely unprofessional of the postal worker to shake the box like that right in front of you, but in all fairness, the package was likely to suffer more severe disturbances throughout the duration of the journey than what that one person inflicted. They were probably just trying to check if it was properly packaged to withstand the trip. Maybe not the best way to get it done, but not entirely without purpose either.

Unfortunately, the USPS, like the IRS, is pretty much immune from anything other than a harsh scolding. Sure, you can complain...but will they compensate you? No. They may send you a heartfelt apology note, assure you it will never happen again, but that's about it.

From the way it sounds, I bet they were also trying to see how much water was in there based on how much of a sloshing they felt.

Yes, unprofessional for sure. Not unlike being dropped, kicked into place, etc. though...which was likely to happen behind the scenes.

I sure hope your BN fry make it!

There is a plastic tray that liquid bearing packages are supposed to go in. If you have a small rural PO such as ours, they can have you drive to the nearest distribution center from which it will be shipped. They don't have to accept it otherwise. I was hassled by our PO until I cited the website info which got me cited the bit about a distribution center.

If you have a personable carrier, try to go the carrier pickup route. It is easier and less hassles.

I have been considering teaching my fish "How to go Postal at the Post Office". It might save their life, you never know . . . . . .

what a joke....

if I was you I would tell them you were shipping super rare pleco fry, worth up to 500 dollars each.
