As part of effort to gather ideas of stocking a future 8x2x2 room dividing tank, I am quite intrigued by the flagtails. I don't have any experience with flagtails so like to find out:

  1. Assuming that there won't be other big fishes, how many matured flagtails can that tank take?
  2. Are they shoaling or schooling fish?
  3. Any male/female ratios? How to tell gender anyways?
  4. Do they go after smaller fishes? Say I mix them with large group of neons, will they be eaten rapidly?
  5. Would the presence of a big cichlid force them to school?
  6. If well fed with veges, do they still eat aqua plants?
  7. They are supposed to be great algae eater, all algae or just certain type?
Thanks for helping.

So then, that would be a 240 gallon tank? I don't know if that's right, mostly because I just used an online aquarium calculator to figure it out... but I'm pretty sure. Ok, so from my calculations, based on the one inch of fish to one gallon of water thing, you could put 20 in there with no other fish. With fish, I would put maybe 10, and they'd probably be ok in those numbers. Also, since breeding has never been recorded in captivity due to their complex migrations, no need to differ between male and female. Umm.... I would be careful with the neon's, but you could always try it! Just offer plenty of live plants and veggies for them, and they should be content and less aggressive towards them. I don't know if these fish will school. You could give it shot, but no guarantees. And they will most certainly try to eat you plants, just because they are naturally grazers, but you could try putting a bunch of blanched veggies like leafy lettuce, securing them to the gravel or a rock or something with the rest of you plants, and see if they will graze on those instead. Oh, and they will eat all algae. Basically anything green and leafy.:) You know, another great fish to look into like these are tinfoil barbs. They will school in groups even of just 3-5 in that big of a tank, but on the downside need to be kept with larger fish because they will eat anything under maybe 4 - 5 inches. Here is some more info. on them:http://www.aquaticcommunity.com/barbs/tinfoilbarb.php

Which Flagtails are you asking about?? There are at least 5 I can think of.
