My filter is make a little noise more than usual and i was wondering if i need to clean it. I have never taken appart or disassembled the the filter. It is either 1 year old or a little older. It is a penguin 200 bio - wheel.

I'd tear it down and give it a good cleaning. There could be a build-up of debris on the impeller, causing the noise.

9 times out of 10 when a filter becomes noisier it needs a good clean-out. Pay special attention to the impeller and impeller well.

yeah, about every 3-5 months I clean mine out. do a water change and save the dirty water in a bucket. then pull your filter apart and wash and rinse in your bucket. this way you are cleaning it, but not destroying beneficial bacteria that has attached itself to your filter parts. using regular tap water will sabotage alot of your "good" bacteria. don't do that. make sure to clean any small tubes with a good wire brush. it will flow better then ever after that!

I just float the media in tank water..I wash the filter in the sink..then rinse it in tank water prior to reinstalling the filter(tank water is in a bucket)

LOL I've actually found hairs wrapped around the impellor in a couple of tanks (mine own, not the cat or dog!!)
