My discus has been headstanding for months. Now she is lying on the tank bottom, with rotting fins and hasn't eaten for months. I'm not sure if I should put her down as my sister says think how the fish feels. I'm sure it doesn't want to leave her mate but I'm sure she's got to be feeling alot of pain too. should I put her down? help please!

have you tried increasing temp/salting? i have had them come back from really poor shape myself. ive been up to and beyond 90 (which may STERILIZE) but with much aeration and a few scotches (for me of course).. miracles can happen. if you have to put it down- the freezerbag works fast

id hate to euthanize a discus. if it must be done and there no alternatives do it but first id do acevudoo said and increase temp to 90 and dose salt that mite help. good luck and sorry about the discus!:(

The tank parameter is the following
temp: 83F
nitrite: 0ppm
nitrate: 10ppm
ph: don't know

MUST be aware of pH! esp. w/Discus! a palmfull of AQUARIUM salt (not mix for SW) get that nitrate to ZERO.. also watch your photoperiods (it really seems to matter to mine).. make sure when you water change it is close in temp. (33gal is tight for such temp dependent creatures) also a common rule of thumb fer Discus people is a 10gal QT! best of wishes!

also-- these EXTREME conditions could cost yer Butterfly beware!! don't loose hope-- bloodworms!! (Hikari) also could try Algae disks for a "floored" disky

bear in mind these are some of the most malleable fish around, however it takes TIME to make any such change... and if you do transfer a sick discus do your best to use your hand or a clear container (very fragile when stressed/sick).

To the latest poster:

ph has zero effect on fish when compared to TDS. And seeing how only one discus is affected I really doubt water chemistry is an issue. Also, I'm not sure how well salt would work in this situation.

The OPs nitrates are well in order. They certainly don't need to be zero...

A salt bath can and will do wonders for a sick discus 83 is a little low IMHO I have mine at 85

this fish must be eating there is noway it has not eaten in a month let alone months.

Which leads me to believe that this fish can be saved.

your sig says you have 4 but you post suggests only 2 ?

could it be that the other(s) are just picking on this one?

put this fish in a hospital tank if you have one it can even be a 5 gal bucket dose it with salt 1 tbs per gallon of water heat the water up to 90 2 degrees per day from the 83 its in now you should see improvement almost right away.

If you do decide euthanize an over dose of co2 is quick and painless it in effect puts the fish to sleep till it dies
