Should I fert. new set-up?

For what it's worth. I dosed: 5ppm NO3 using KNO3, 1.0ppm PO4 using fleet enema, 30mls BigAlsMicro's = ~.25ppm chelated iron, 11ppm K (6from KNO3, 5 from KCL), 1 tsp Mg (Epsom salts). Why I dosed to .25 iron (b/c the instructions said .25-.5ppm) instead of only .1 is beyond me!
The next day the tank was getting cloudy/green. I waited one more day, it looked a little worse. Did a 50% water change and re-dosed at a lighter dosage.
Dosed to 3ppm NO3 using KNO3, no KCL, 1 tsp Mg (using Epsom salt), .1 iron using Plantex CSM+B, 0.5ppm PO4 (fleet enema). I also added 6 Amano shrimp, not many in a 90gal tank! Like freaking magic *poof!* tank cleared up like crystal!
 
If you do the mulm and peat thing to the substrate, then you can dose whatever you want.

Otherwise, some breakin peroid will be required.

I've been doing the peat thing for quite a few years now, I've always done the mulm thing.
I've never had green water is 15 years of plant keeping even with all the torture I've done, until I add NH4.

Right, what I meant was once you put them in the tank. Stem plants are clippings so the plant should need to send out roots and rosette plants usually have their roots trimmed for shipping (right?) so it seems they would grow roots back. Why would the plant use up stores if it had nutrients and light readily available?
 
No light doesn't mean no growth. No light means no photosynthesis. PS being the harvesting of energy, often called the 'light cycle'. The use of that energy is light independant called the 'dark cycle'. When the lights go off, the plants are still growing, they become net respirers like us, they still need the nutrients and they still grow.
