Hi everyone,

I am currently focusing on my 29G planted tank leaving my 65g one empty. I am thinking of having a silver Arowana but hesitating with the size of my tank. I understand that Arowana needs at least 75G up - What if I don't abide such rule and use my 65g, would it be possible?

The issue with me is I do not have enough space for bigger tank but I do love to own Arowana even though I have no experience with this fish before. Kind help and direction please.

silver arrowanas reach 35-40''
tank size 125 Gallon 72x18x22
or would be the minimum size tanks 150 Gallon 72x18x28
Simple answer is no since you can't provide the minimum requirements for long term care. All you will do is stunt the fishes growth this leads to health issues also silver are famous for jumping.-Anne

Anne is definitely right. Silver arowanas grow to 3 feet easily in captivity, it would not be possible to keep one in a 65 or a 75G. A 6 foot long tank is the minimum.

one of the LFS here has a 30" silver in a 300 gal tank..
He makes it look small, and cramped. Personally I think they are better left inthe wild, and the smallest tank to comfortably house them would still have to be Huge by most standards..

There are other long, silvery, big-mouthed predators if it's mainly the arowana "look" you are interested in.

Have you considered the violet/ dragon goby? It's somewhat arowana-like in form but is a more manageable size. You'll need to salt the water a bit.

Alternatively, it is possible one of the smaller bichirs could fit in your 65 (correct me if I'm wrong, beblondie).
